Content and Overview
This course is suitable for all types of authors, whether you’re just starting out or you’re a veteran author who needs a boost. Through these lectures and learning materials, you’ll learn the basics of publicity so you can do it yourself.
I created this course to pull back the curtain on how members of the media think and work, so that even a beginning student of the media can understand how to navigate their way through this world. This course is for authors who want to understand how the professional media works, and how to engage in a more professional manner with working members of the media. This course is meant for any author (traditionally or self-published) who wants to build a platform, demonstrate his or her expertise, and become a go-to expert in his or her category.
Many make the mistake of thinking they only have one topic to discuss with interviewers. This course will explain the different ways to create “multiple entry points,” which allows an author to make credible pitches to several media outlets at the same time—or go back to same outlet again and again.
There are numerous ways to create a pitch. Through this course, you’ll learn how to create pitches based on the themes that may be found in your book. You’ll learn how to create pitches based on your personal story. You’ll learn how to find stories already in the media—including trending news, special events, and holidays—so that you can capture attention and convince them to include you in that media coverage.
Students completing this course will have the knowledge to present themselves as viable candidates for interviews and features in print media, broadcast media, and digital media.
What will students need to know or do before starting the course?
Students do not need to have a finished book to begin build their brand through publicity. However, students do need to understand the core of their brand message—that is, what they want to share with the world. You should have a dedicated author website, and access to basic word processing tools.
